Rain and cold weather prevented me from painting en plein air today so I attempted painting alla prima, Italian for "first attempt" or wet-on-wet. This painting technique requires the artist to paint layers of wet paint over layers of wet paint and it dates back to the Impressionists period. Monet and Van Gogh were known for their "on the spot" painting, usually finishing a painting in one sitting. "I Love You" is a painting I started this morning, painting very quickly, in the warmth of my home studio. The subject (very popular at this time of the year) was painted from the dozen red roses my husband gave me for Valentine's Day.

Several months ago when Bailey, a precious Yorkie, passed away I received a phone call from my friend Sharon asking me to paint his portrait for her sister-in-law. Those of you who have pets in heaven know that emptiness that losing a dear snuggly tail-waggin' friend creates in your heart.Bailey has a sweet smile that is infectious, and it was an honor to paint him.

Sonya, a neighbor of mine came over and looked at my paintings in my "studio-turned home". Seems like I have paintings everywhere, I also have a "gallery-hallway", thanks to my husband.
She chose one memaid as a gift for her grand daughter and commissioned another mermaid. Adrienne, her four year old grand daughter received both mermaid paintings yesterday. "Adrienne" is the mermaid on the left and "Ariel" is on the right.

Painting my best friend Sandy, as a mermaid was so much fun! I was thrilled when her daughter, Michelle commissioned a painting of her mom as a mermaid.....those of you who know me, know how I feel about mermaids! Well, to paint my bff as a mermaid? It doesn't get better than that! Quickly I started looking at all the photos of Sandy to find just the right one! Bingo! This photograph was taken at a little Wine Cafe in Hope Mills that we enjoy visiting from time to time.
I placed Sandy in the water like she was casually reading a book and soaking up some waves, look closely at the title of the book. Sandy has a way of telling or describing information prefaced with "this is the deal", so of course, I titled the painting "The Deal".

Alex's wedding gift to Danielle was a painted album commissioned from me titled "Our Story " which expressed 5 significant events in their lives. A sentimental gift is what Alex wanted to give to his new wife. "516 West Duke Circle" was my mother and father-in-law's address until 1999 when Hurricane Floyd left flooding in the Rocky Mount area. The flood took everything, they painfully lost their loving home where they reared 6 young children and where their grand children played. I remember getting "the call" from my sister-in-law, Ann and with a heavy heart she said "we lost everything". Laura and Guy (my in-laws) shared many loving memories with their children and grandchildren at "516 West Duke Circle".
As I painted this portrait of their old home, many special memories of their loving home filled my heart. I especially remember that maw-maw would always let the grass get a little bit high at Easter so the grandchildren would have more fun finding their Easter eggs. This painting is about many loving family moments felt at "516 West Duke Circle".
This weekend as we celebrated maw maw's 82nd birthday, she and paw paw braced themselves for another hurricane, Irene. This storm had a very different outcome than Floyd, Irene left only a few hours of clean-up and some inconvenient power outtage.

They are pretty close and have been together for many years, just recently they both graduated from Harrells Christian Academy. In the fall the two sisters will be attending different colleges. Hopefully these two small portraits will find their homes at Elon and Appalachian and remind the "Sisters" of sweet memories.

I have a new love...my new French Resistance pochade box. Pochade is French word that means "fast sketch", hence you have to paint quickly because of the changing light (this is how the Impressionists painted). Artists use pochade boxes to make their studio portable. It is set up to hold your paints, palettes, brushes, easel, paint thinner, brush cleaner and canvas......you can even accessorize it by adding hooks that hold additional brushes, paper towels and water bottles.........wonder if you can attach a wine glass and rhinestsones? Hmmm....
I ventured outside in my front yard to try it out for the first time. The red bud tree caught my eye this morning. A new challenge for this woman, I look forward to spending much more time with my new love, I can even take it in my kayak...yay!

"LuLu" is a woolie cutie-pie sheep painted in oil and measures 5" x 7". I bought a three-dimensional decorative sheep from Smellie Bloomers, a unique gift shop in Elizabethtown. My goal was to capture her friendly nature and her adorable woolie coat in paint. I took the sheep that I bought, placed her on a table and put a spotlight on her and went to work painting her. I had so much fun painting "LuLu's" woolie texture.

I was asked to create a painting for a lady whose husband has lung cancer. As I spoke with Jamie, I learned that she is a strong lung cancer awareness advocate. Jamie wanted me to design a painting communicating lung cancer awareness. She told me that the color pearl was a symbol for lung cancer and she requested that I include pearls in the cancer ribbon. I decided to surround the ribbon with a bold black and white swirling motif.
Little did she know that lung cancer took my mother's life almost 24 years ago. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer on March 1, 1987 and died June 1, 1987 only three months later. As I painted the pearls in the ribbon I remembered the strand of pearls that my mother wore around her neck. Oh, the memories......thanks to Jamie for asking me to paint this. I hope you like your painting.
Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in the U.S.

Many people have asked me why I paint sock monkeys, and this little monkey named "Patty" was my inspiration. I first saw her at Smellie Bloomers before Christmas and I had to have her, she just had that special caring look about her. I brought her home and painted her portrait! She reminded me of the sock monkey that my youngest son had when he was in the hospital a long long time ago. His sock monkey was the traditional brown monkey and was made by hand.

Snow is on the ground and love is in the air. Being snowed in has given me the opportunity to package my original Valentine cards. Remember those days when you held your children close and read to them, seems like it was only yesterday. As I painted this portrait of a mother and her two small children, I took a walk down memory lane. Every day there was a special time carved out for reading, especially the book "I'll Love You Forever". What mom hasn't read that book to her children? Oh and if you haven't, run out and get it, you'll know why it's so special when you read it.
The two children in this painting are both grown now, they asked me to paint their portrait from when they were little and wanted to express something special for their mom. What a special Christmas present for her! I hope this special mom will enjoy this portrait for many years to come!

Garrett has a sweet and beautiful girlfriend named Hannah. He came to me a few months ago and brought a photograph and wanted me to paint a special gift for her, a portrait of him! As you can see Garrett is a fine fireman, rather good looking, if I say so myself.
I couldn't wait to get my brush in the paint and start painting, especially since I have known Garrett since he was a little boy. Often he would come to our house to play with my two sons. Garrett has grown up to be a fine fine young man and has a respectable and honorable job with the Fayetteville Fire Dept. Wanting to express his love for his God and mankind, I included the scripture from John 15:13. Take a closer look in the background of the painting,"Greater love has no one than this than to lay down one's life for his friends." is written into the flag.
I am posting a few progress pics just to show you how I start my paintings, first I paint a tonal color, then sketch out the subject. One of the first elements I paint are the eyes. Garrett stopped by to check the progress, just to make sure I was on the right track. Sure hope Hannah liked his portrait. Merry Christmas Hannah!

Bunnies are not just for Easter! This sweet white bunny brings sweet pink cotton-candy dreams to a dear friend.
When asked to paint a white bunny with a pink background for Christmas, I was delighted and up for the challenge. The bow became a problem and I painted it three different times til I was satisfied.
This little bunny will find a warm place to rest come this December, in a friend's warm festive kitchen.

In the hot sweltering heat of July, I turned down the air conditioning, turned on my Ipod, dialed up my Christmas music and began painting snowmen. So far, I have painted 15 snowmen and snowladies in various compositions, facial expressions, colors schemes and moods.
Next Sunday from 2:00-6:00 pm, all of my new snowman paintings will be for sale at Smellie Bloomers Christmas Open House. Smellie Bloomers is located at 501 West Broad Street in Elizabethtown, NC.
"Laugh, Dance, Believe" is my largest snowman, he is painted on a deep gallery-wrapped canvas and is inspired by a charming snowman ornament I saw at Smellie Bloomers.

As the weather is cooling down I can't help but feel some Christmas spirit rumblings in my soul. I love the fall as it ends one season and ushers in jolly Christmastime...my favorite! People visiting my home studio are astonished to see the Halloween and fall decorations sitting right beside my new Christmas paintings. Ah, that's one part of being an artist that I love.......celebrating more than one season at a time!
My chosen holiday subject to paint this year is snowmen. I began painting them in July! "Bluebird" is special because this snowlady loves birds, looks like she's trying to coax the bluebird to visit the nest she is holding.

Last week a dear friend of mine and I went on a little outing. We had fun enjoying the beautiful weather and friendly conversation,. We stopped in a sweet little town and saw some amazing beautifully decorated items. In one store we saw some beautiful calla lillies. I was so inspired, I decided to paint one using warm autumn colors. As I was blending the oil paint, I decided to call upon one of my old tricks of the trade - fingerpainting! I realized that my fingers could smoothly, blend the paint better than my brush!

"Coral Smiles" was painted especially for an East Bladen teacher as a house warming gift, given by one of her loyal and pretty students. I was so honored that Paige asked me to do this for her. She wanted to give her teacher, who is much more than a teacher, a very special gift. I worked with Mrs. Hair and I know that she is an awesome and inspiring teacher. My son was one of her students and he said that you could never be bored in her class! Among her titles, she is an inspiring teacher, coach, mentor, friend, and mom. I also had the honor of teaching Paige, and she is such a dear, if all of our students were like her, I might not have retired.
Who am I kidding, yes, I would have still retired, because we still keep in touch!

As the waves help "Marina" to maneuver in and around the water, she has no trouble finding special treasures near the bottom of the ocean. Because of Marina's exceptional beauty, a gleaming golden star fish seems to be drawn to her, bringing her good luck and fortune.
I hope you like my "Marina", she was painted for a beautiful lady who also loves the water. I think she is one of the prettiest mermaids that I have painted.

Teri asked me to paint a painting for her daughter's birthday this month. The painting was inspired by a photo that Teri took at Bald Head Island in the early 90's. The composition and subject matter is her son Ian and her daughter Hawley leaning on an old piece of driftwood with the ocean in the background. Reminds me of my childhood days at the beach, dreaming, playing and really believing that I had no care in the world.

My hair stylist asked me to create a painting especially for her home. A Tuscan scene with reds and golds would work perfectly in her home. I worked on the landscape for months and every time I had a hair appointment, I would give her an update by showing her pictures on my camera or by bringing the canvas to the Salon. I wanted to make the painting more personal and special, so I asked Ernie did she have anything of special significance that she would like for me to include in the compostion? She did of course, and brought me a cherished golden pin that once belonged to her mother, I painted it in the bottom right hand corner.
Ernie is a wonderful hair stylist, but she is also a great friend. I titled the Tuscan scene "Tuscan Romance" because when one thinks of love or romance, you might think of flowers, beautiful scenery, and a little wine perhaps-and a friend or memory to share.
Here's to you Ernie, thanks for being my hair stylist and treasured friend! Love you!

Friends, true friends are like the rarest of jewels. I am blessed to have two dear friends, Mike and Edna. Edna has rocked both my boys when they were infants and has been a dear family friend for years. Mike, her husband and I go back way back b.c. (before children). After leaving Bladen County for greener pastures, he has always come back to visit and stays in touch. As Mike and Edna travel around the world, they send us beautiful postcards, and I have to say, I am quite jealous of their travels!

"Mike's Paradise" is composed of Edna's favorite Hawaiian places. Giovanni's Shrimp Truck is one of the most popular trucks in Hawaii, and from what I understand the shrimp are quite yummy. Matsumoto Shave Ice has been displayed in various magazines, news articles, and television programs. Matsumoto's homemade shave ice flavors are also enjoyed by celebrities such as Tom Hanks, I wonder if Edna met him when she was there?

In the background you will see Kualoa Regional Park's view of the islet Mokoli'i. My research tells me of a little ancestral history of the islet. It is said that the little island originated from the fluke of a cut off tail of a dragon-like creature. Now, the little island is referred to as "Chinaman's Hat" because it resembles a coolie hat to many people.

A few weeks ago, a sweetie pie, Lauren, Facebooked me and asked me to paint a portrait of their Chinese Pug, Bebe. This was to be a special portrait for her mom's birthday because Bebe died during the winter, and she told me that her mom was having a difficult time with her loss. Now, if that doesn't put the pressure on an artist, what does? Later, Lauren's daddy called to confirm the painting and the details. I was on a mission! As a dog lover, and one that has experienced the death of a special pet named Becky, I was charged and motivated to do my best. Sharon, the birthday girl, surely deserved my best! Really, I haven't painted too many dogs, but I have found that I enjoy painting dogs immensely. Upon completion, Sharon's son, Crae came to pick the portrait up and I was so delighted to see him.
My how he has grown, and so handsome! I remember teaching him art in high school, he is so witty, clever and talented too, Crae always added spice and humor to my class.
I am thankful to this family and I am touched, because I know how difficult it is to give someone special a gift that they will enjoy and will treasure. Sharon is a lucky 29 year old (you look great girl!) , her children and husband thought about giving her such a special and unique gift, I am honored. Happy Birthday to Sharon!

This painting was created for a young lady, dear friend of mine. She is a cancer survivor and has battled cancer twice. I will be selling 8" x 10" prints, but no personal profit will be made by me. Instead the profit will be donated to Relay for Life to help find a cure for cancer. Relay for Life in Bladen county will be held May 7-8, 2010.

"Kathyrn" is a symbolic self portrait, every object has a purpose for being in the painting. The idea of painting myself as a mermaid emerged because of where I was born. Southport, NC is my place of birth and as a little girl, I played in the Atlantic Ocean. My father often took me fishing at Bald Head Island. The shells, ocean, and fish represent those fun earlier times in my life.
I wanted to depict the mermaid bobbing around in the ocean, just as life's journey takes us up and down as we meet different obstacles and challenges. The tea cup, wine glass, and purse reflect the times I spend with my girlfriends, shopping and sharing conversation, sometimes, my cup surely runs over. "Bling-bling" is one of my nicknames, and the Trollbead bracelet and fantasy necklace I am wearing are gifts from my husband, sons and friends. The peacock is a symbol of good luck, my life is full of blessings: my family and friends. The turquoise wristband on the mermaid's left arm represents the connection I have with cancer, God please help us find a cure for cancer! I have lost several friends and both parents to this horrid disease. My brother is in remission and a very dear friend "C" has battled cervical cancer twice. They are both my heroes!
The crowning glory is the sweet red cardinal that sits on the peacock, apart from me, but very close to me. The cardinal is a symbol of my dear mother, she loved the red bird so! I feel that she is still with me looking out for me.

Painting the little Frenchie, Gwen and her chicken friends was challenging and a joy. This one was commissioned by a friend for her husband for Christmas. Gwen is such a special treasure to her owners. As I painted I wondered what Gwen must think of her new friends that have taken part ownership in her backyard. She seems to be telling them, "I still rule the roost", and even though she is sharing part of her place, she knows she is the favored one.

"Melody for Louise" was created especially for a little lady who lives in Clarkton. What a wonderful lady she is! I had the pleasure of working with Louise years ago when I worked at the bank. Her daughter called me and asked me to paint something special for her mother. Something that would tie in her love for bluebirds and one of her favorite songs "I Come to the Garden Alone". Look closely and you can see some of the words from that old hymn.

It is gold framed, but can be taken out and displayed on an easel all by itself, or you can frame it yourself. This photo shows how it looks on my antique sideboard in my dining room, right near my easel where I'm painting bunny rabbits on this gloomy cold and rainy day.

A local business owner asked me to create a painting of his restaurant, Hamburger Paradise. I really enjoyed painting the red corvette as well as the building. This painting is one of my first architectural style paintings. I have truly enjoyed the wide variety of subject matter that I painted last year....portraits, dogs, dragonflies, mermaids, buildings, still-lifes, sea life, lakescapes, seascapes, landscapes and flowers, to name a few. Each subject and collector speaks to me differently and I enjoy the challenge of digging way down into my soul to capture just the right look or moment with my paint brush or palette knife. I look forward to additional painting challenges in 2010.

This is a recent commission piece created especially for a mother of four daughters. She has a busy life, but always puts her kids first. I chose the title "Silver Linings" because at the end of her long hard day, she lights up when she sees her children. They are her "Silver Linings".
This piece is done loosely with a huge brush and palette knife. I added silver leaf to help achieve movement.

Another painting I did for a special young lady, Santa brought this to her for Christmas. She loves penguins and has a beautiful little Yorkie named Kiki. I do hope she liked the painting, it was sheer fun painting penguins on the beach! Love you Nichole!

"Three Gifts" is a painting I created for a Christmas present for parents of some friends and art collectors of mine. When I was asked to paint these dogs, I was a bit nervous because I had never painted dogs before, only one cat! I sure hope that their parents enjoyed receiving this painting - when I got into my painting mode, I found that I really really love painting dogs! These dogs are very special to their owners and I truly understand that very special relationship and bond between "owner and dog" (being a dog lover that I am)!

Some people are hesitant to celebrate Christmas before Thanksgiving. I believe that if you have a thankful heart and remember the reason for the season, you can celebrate all year long! My living room, dining room, and kitchen look like Santa's artist workshop. I'm thinking about taking over my oldest son's bedroom next. I just don't have enough space...sounds like I could be wishing for a studio for Christmas...mmm???Santa are you listening?
This photo is a taste of what I will have for sale at Smellie Bloomers this Sunday. As you know I have painted only 12 Santas exclusively for the owner, Michelle, when they are gone, there will be no more this year! I am pleasantly booked up til summer next year! What a wonderful problem to have. A "Santa Nature" print is featured above in an antique frame, it is darling and just fits the old, white, decorative wide frame. Burgaw has several sweet little antique shops and I picked up this frame at a darling little antique shop there. I will also have prints available for purchase or to order for that special someone. I received several emails from friends suggesting inspirational words, hymns, scriptures, and verses to use in this birdsnest painting. My favorite suggestion came from my cousin, Sheila. Thanks sis, and to all of you who emailed your kind suggestions!
This oil painting entitled "Grace Will Lead Me Home" is inspired by the third verse of the beautiful hymn, "Amazing Grace". These lyrics are painted in the background and on the birdnest in the oil painting. An English writer, John Newton wrote the lyrics of the song in 1725. As a youth, Newton lacked religious beliefs, but later as he served in the Royal Navy, his beliefs began to change. He came very close to losing his life on board a ship during a violent storm, and he believed the only way his life was saved that night was through the Grace of God.
Memories of singing "Amazing Grace" in an old Baptist church when I was a little girl bring back sweet times shared with family and friends. Such a popular and meaningful song then, but much sweeter now.
Birds use nests to protect eggs and nestlings from predators and harsh weather conditions. Nests also help to keep the eggs warm and are usualy hidden or camouflaged so predators cannot find them. Through the Grace of God, we are warmed, protected, and safely cared for. Just as the verse explains 'through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come. Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and Grace will lead me home.'
This painting will be included in the Wesley's Chapel Auction on Saturday, November 7, 2009. Auction begins at 7 p.m., bazaar starts at 10:00 a.m.
